Sondrio, Tirano, Bormio and Livigno
A day trip from Lake Como to the stunning Alpine destinations of Valtellina: Sondrio, Tirano, Bormio, and Livigno. An unforgettable journey through some of Lombardy’s most spectacular landscapes. If you have only one day to explore this region, follow this itinerary for a full adventure.
The day begins with an early morning departure from Lake Como, heading toward Valtellina, a valley renowned for its vineyards and towering mountains. The first stop is Sondrio, the capital city of the province with the same name, about a 1 hour and 30-minute drive away.
Sondrio: Traditions and Wines
Sondrio is a small city with a charming historic center, rich in history and culture. Here, you can stroll through the narrow medieval streets and visit the Pretorio Palace, or take a break for a coffee in one of the peaceful squares. If time allows, a brief visit to one of the many local wineries is a must, to taste the famous Valtellina Superiore wine, produced in the terraced vineyards that characterize the region.
Tirano: The Bernina Express
Continuing on, after about 30 minutes of driving, you arrive in Tirano, an enchanting village located near the Swiss border. Tirano is famous not only for its beauty but also for being the starting point of the renowned Bernina Express, a UNESCO World Heritage attraction that crosses the Alps to St. Moritz. Even if you don’t have time to board the train, you can admire the Basilica of Madonna di Tirano, a Renaissance church of great spiritual and historical importance.
Bormio: Thermal Baths and Mountains
After exploring Tirano, you head to Bormio, about 45 minutes away. Bormio is a famous mountain resort, known for its World Cup ski slopes and its thermal baths. A stop at the Bormio Thermal Baths is the perfect way to relax, even if just for a brief rejuvenating dip in the natural thermal waters, surrounded by mountains. If you prefer exploring, a stroll through Bormio’s historic center will take you back in time, with its cobbled streets and historic buildings, such as the Torre delle Ore.
Livigno: Shopping and Nature
Your final stop of the day is Livigno, a paradise for nature lovers and shopping enthusiasts, located about 45 minutes from Bormio. Thanks to its status as a duty-free zone, Livigno is perfect for tax-free shopping on various items, including fashion and technology. But Livigno is also an ideal area for outdoor sports, with countless trails for hiking, cycling, and scenic walks. Even a simple walk through the town’s streets offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
After exploring Livigno, it’s time to head back to Lake Como. The return trip takes about 2 and a half hours, and you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the mountains at sunset as you descend toward the plains. Although it will have been a busy day, the memories of historic towns, relaxing thermal baths, and Alpine landscapes will stay with you for a long time.
