Located on the eastern shore of Lake Como, just opposite Bellagio, the village of Varenna is known as the diamond of the Lario. Characterized by narrow streets of ups and downs full of bars, restaurants, and local handicraft shops, it is the perfect destination to spend pleasant days enjoying the tranquility of the lake. Not to be missed is a stop at the Lovers’ Promenade “Passeggiata degli innamorati”, a walkway suspended above between rock and water that traverses all of Varenna, from the boat dock to the center of the village. Villa Monastero, which dates back to the late 12th century, is a must-see for history and nature enthusiasts. It now houses a museum, conference center, and botanical park stretching over 2km. A true gem of architecture, botany, and history, allowing visitors to travel through time. Finally, it is impossible not to mention the Vezio Castle, or “Castello di Vezio,” a fortification over a thousand years old that can be reached on foot from the center of Varenna and offers an unmissable view of the entire lake center. Its dungeons can be visited, as well as the tower and the botanical garden, which houses a falconry school and plaster statues depicting ghosts.
