Swiss town across the border
The geographical location of Lake Como allows the many tourists who choose it as their vacation destination to explore numerous surrounding territories of considerable historical-cultural and enogastronomic interest.
The “day out” that we want to recommend in this edition of our magazine is a day trip to Lugano, a Swiss town across the border that will leave you with unforgettable memories and emotions.
Lugano is only 33 kilometers from Como and the center of the lake and 60 from Lecco, and is easily reached by car or taxi or by train, making it convenient to visit in a day, returning toward evening to one’s accommodation in the Como area. Please note, however, that in order to reach Lugano, it is necessary to cross the Italian state frontier and therefore one must carry one’s identity documents to be shown, if asked, at customs.
Whether you reach Lugano by car or by train, our advice is to start your visit from the historic center, more precisely from Piazza Riforma, the city’s vital hub with its many bars, restaurants and stores. Not far away, walking through the streets of the center, you will find the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, with its very white Renaissance facade dating back to 1517. Before leaving the historic center, a stroll through the shopping streets with luxury boutiques and jewelry stores is a must; among the best known is certainly Via Nassa, which is home to major international brands such as Gucci, Prada and Louis Vuitton just to name a few.
Our excursion out of town comes to its conclusion, you can then at the end of this itinerary comfortably return to Lake Como knowing that you have also had the opportunity to visit one of the most important cities in Italian Switzerland.
